I didn't read anything beyond the first page, so this most likely buried somewhere within.
Pets:
Lynx
Warthog
Bear
Dune Lizard
Wolf
Moa Bird
Melandru's Stalker
Black Widow
Elder Wolf
Snow Wolf
Black Moa Bird
Dire Tiger
Tiger
White Tiger
Blue Reef Lurker
Red Reef Lurker
Crane
Elder Crane
Phoenix
I hope that's the complete list of pets, but it's probably missing 1 or more. All pets have slightly different stats, and those can probably be found on guildwiki. The "best" is still entirely personal preference, so just choose whichever you find most appealing to look at.

In this thread, I saw two people who said they wanted to know the title of their pet, but because they renamed it, they feel unsure how to obtain the original title. There is a solution:
To reset your pets name to see the title, type in the following:
/petname
notice how you did not specify a name. This will reset the name back to the original title. For example, my pets name is Fluffy, if I reset it using the command bove, the name will change to the default "Elder Wolf", thus displaying the title. Hope this helps

My favorite combo in Random arenas is: Call of Haste + Poisonous bite.
I play a Warrior/Ranger with a pet in RA, I use Sever Artery, Gash and Poisonous Bite for -7 degen, so if they run away from me and my pet, they are still suffering a lot of HP loss and my pet can still chase them down via Haste. Me and my pet have KO'd alot of monks this way its so fun

by far the best pet in the game is the black moa. The pheonix is meh, its very easy to get. Whereas the black moa is only attainable through a really annoying quest. I have had just about every pet in the game i could. I really wish there was a pet storage..i really do. i would have about 15 pets or so. my fav goes like so
black moa
reef lurker (blue)
moa
warthog
black widow
then the rest are boring and worthless

No it's not. No pet is 'the best'. As there is no 'best' weapon, no 'best' profession, no 'best' armor. Stop the 'best' stuff. It isn't.

Agreed there is no best pet. Its a fashion thing.
Basically:
All pets use the same damage fomula unless they evolve to Dire/Hearty.
2-4 DMG, Lvl 1 pet
17-28 DMG, Lvl 20 pet
Dmg = Slash
Attack Speed = 2 sec.
Beast Mastery attribute modifies the attack bonus for pets.
All pets have the same armor and health unless they evolve.
AL=20 at Lvl 1
AL=80 at Lvl 20

I actully consider the spider along with the dune lizard to be out right second worst pet (behind bear) at this stage in time in pvp, as often teams will bring "shields up" to counter ranger spike and such. And there is no such commonly packed skill to counter Slashing damage. This is ofcourse not including the factions pets

----
I have a bear atm caught in the shiverpeaks, at first it was dead in like 2 blows from any enemy, but it started to work out at lvl 10... now its at lvl 20 and it can take quite a beating and dish out some nice as well...

Ok, Here is how it works with the pet thing....
There is NO better pet then another, I repeat NO better pet....All types of pets have the exact same base damage level, same base armor level, and same base health level. The only difference is type of damage given, most pets giving slashing damage, but lizards and spiders give piercing damage. The only other difference being attacking speed....and all of them attack at same speed except for the bear, which attacks slower...effectivley making this the WORST pet to have.
Now the type your pet is (i.e. playful/hearty, aggressive/dire, or elder) gives changes to their base stats. To train your pet to a certain type depends almost entirely on amount of damage recieved by pet, and partially on amount of dmg your pet deals in relation to yourself. If your pet recieves a lot of damage, it will progress to playful, and then to hearty at lvl 15. To train it to be aggressive/dire, use beast mastery skills that reduce dmg recieved to pet, and maximize beast mastery, adn lower your attack dmg, adn it will progress ot aggressive, then dire at lvl 15. Elder is a balance between Dire and Hearty, I have not figured out how to train it to achieve this however. As far as loosing the name (dire black widow, hearty stalker etc..for example) after naming your pet, this is false.....if you want to see what your pet has progressed to, you can simply reset the name by typing: /namepet, or /petname (both work) without adding a name behind it, and the name will be reset (i.e /namepet george, will change the pets name to george, /namepet , will then reset the name back to Hearty Black Widow Spider etc...).
Oh, and there are 2 pets you can get in Cantha that are already lvl 20's like the Spider in Tyria, those being the Black Moa Bird, adn the Pheonix

The Pet Guide and the Guildwiki article says no differences in pets. I am not disagreeing with these sources. (Still using my old Stalker)
But I recall an interview in which a game designer for GW said when asked about differences in pets something like, "Yes, but we are going to leave those undocumented for players to discover." Now maybe they changed that when the game was officially released, and maybe they didn't.

Just a nit pick, the Pheonix is lvl 5.
I actually prefer that over the spider or the black moa scheme. Using the method someone else posted here, I have trained two lvl 5 pet to lvl 15 dire in about two hours each.
With the spider, it's a luck of draw as to what type of spider you will get. And the black moa, until it's been tested, I'm guessing it's elder.
BTW, there are lvl 15 tigers that can be charmed. I have only seen the orange ones myself.

I remember that too. Maybe there's elemental resistance for each different kind of pet? I'm too lazy to read more pet threads, but it's safe to say arena net doesn't know what they're talking about, right?
